Is Baccarat for You?

Unlike other casino games, like Blackjack, Baccarat is purely based on chance. It is the only table game in which you cannot influence the outcome of the game. Players bet, cards are dealt, and winners are announced. Yet there is elegance in its simplicity. So, if you are looking for a game where you don’t have to memorize complicated bets or an entire book of rules, Baccarat may be the game for you.

Punto Banco

The simplest version of Baccarat is called Punto Banco, which means Player Bank in Italian. This is how you play: First, place your bets at the start of the game. Bet on whether the Player or the Bank will have the highest points or tie the game. Did you bet on Player (punto) or Bank (banco)? Note that the terms “Player” and “Bank” do not refer to you as a player or the dealer as the bank; in Baccarat these are just the names given to the two sides at play.

Then, the dealer will give out two cards to each side, the Player and the Bank. The royal cards are worth 0 points, and the rest of the cards A through 9 are worth their face values. The points are then added up. If the sum of the two cards is more than 10, the first digit or the digit in the tenth place is dropped. If there is a 4 and a 6, the sum is 0 and not 10; if there is a 9 and a 6 the sum is 5 and not 15, etc. This means that the highest possible point is a 9 which is known as a Natural and wins automatically.

That’s it. Did you pick the winning side?

Betting on the Player, the Bank, or a Tie

A round of Baccarat is over before you know it in this simple-to-play, simple-to-learn game. Aside from the Bank or Player bets, there are two other bets that may interest you since the rewards are higher. Whereas betting on Bank or Player gives you a 1:1 return, winning on a tie bet gets you an 8:1 return. You can also bet on a “Pair on Player” or “Pair on Bank,” this means that you predict that the two cards dealt to either the Player or Bank will match. If you bet on a Pair on Player and the Player gets two Queens, for instance, you will win and be paid 11:1. Note, however, that the House advantage is 14 percent, so play carefully.
